Introduction
Success in IB Business Management is not just about knowing the content—it is also about understanding how you are assessed. Knowing the IB Business Management assessment structure helps you decide where to focus your time, effort, and revision.
Higher Level (HL)
For Higher Level students, the final grade is divided across four components:
- Paper 1 – 25%
- Paper 2 – 30%
- Paper 3 – 25%
- Internal Assessment (IA) – 20%
This means that Paper 2 carries the highest weighting, while Papers 1 and 3 each contribute 25%. Your IA also makes up a significant 20%, so it should not be treated as a last-minute assignment.
Standard Level (SL)
For Standard Level students, the assessment is divided into three components:
- Paper 1 – 35%
- Paper 2 – 35%
- Internal Assessment (IA) – 30%
Here, Papers 1 and 2 are equally important, while the IA contributes almost one-third of the final grade.
What Does This Mean for Students?
The key message is simple: every component matters. Don’t wait until exam season to start preparing. Build your knowledge throughout the year, practise applying business concepts to real-world situations, develop strong analysis and evaluation skills, and work consistently on your Internal Assessment.
